Why BME?
The direct predecessor of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) is the Institutum Geometrico-Hydrotechnicum, founded in 1782, which was the first institute in Europe to train engineers in university structure.
BME’s mission, inseparable from training and education, is to conduct scientific research which encompasses the three activities required to make up the innovation chain: fundamental and applied research, technological product and service development, and the application of research findings.
The popularity of BME’s foreign language courses is growing year by year. Students arriving from foreign countries, represent over 12% of BME’s enrolment, and the students come from over 30 countries.
Many young people are studying at BME as part of the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme, which aims to support the internationalization of Hungarian higher education. With this high number of foreign students, BME ranks second in Hungary.
With its regular high-ranking positions BME is among the top universities (2-6%) globally. The British ranking company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) surveys the performance of over 1400 higher education institutions in five large areas (arts and humanities, engineering and technology, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences and social sciences) covering a total of 51 disciplines. Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) has been the single Hungarian university making it to the list on the engineering and technology field, and achieves better rankings year after year.
